About Havering

At 112 square kilometres (43 square miles), Havering is the third largest London borough by area. It holds a strategic position within outer East London, with good rail and road links to Central London, Canary Wharf, Stratford and the 2012 Olympics, London City and Stansted airports, Channel Tunnel rail stations, the M25 and the Essex and Kent ports. Havering has a total population of 234,100 (121,400 Males and 112,700 females). Of that 63.6% of them are aged 16-64.

Romford is the largest town centre on the east side of London, and has seen a revival in recent years with £400 million of private and public sector investment. It needs to maintain this strong position in the face of competition from other major centres, notably Lakeside and Bluewater and the new Stratford City development.

Employment is mainly concentrated in Romford and the other town centres, and in the strategic industrial areas in Rainham and Harold Hill, though there are also secondary employment areas throughout the borough. The Rainham employment area has the greatest opportunities for large scale regeneration and investment. Havering offers 71,300 employee jobs (excluding those self employees), with 65.7% being full time. Most of these jobs fall under Finance, Information Technology and other business activities.
