John Harvey, Director of Public Health, Havering PCT

Spent nine years working in the mountains of the Yemen doing primary health care, specialising in maternal and child health, and tuberculosis control, under the aegis of an international Christian NGO. Returned to UK (Cambridge) in early 1980's and entered specialist training in community medicine, soon to be known as public health medicine. After completing training took up first consultant position in West Suffolk, but moved two years later to Newcastle in 1989. Appointed as Director of Public Health for Newcastle and North Tyneside in 1992. Went to Jersey in 1998 to take up a new post for the island - Consultant in Public Health Medicine. Appointed Medical Officer of Health/Director of Public Health Services for Jersey in December 2000. Moved to Havering in October 2003 to take up post as Director of Public Health for Havering PCT and visiting Professor in the Institute of Primary Care and Public Health at London South Bank University. Special interests include child health and sustainable development.

Our priorities and commitments:

  • Tackle health inequalities
  • Tackle the demands of an ageing population and improve the quality of life for older people by tailoring care so they can live healthily and safely at home whenever possible
  • Develop services to address rising levels of obesity
  • Address increasing demands for mental health and alcohol services
  • Improve partnership working to develop coordinated services for children and young people at risk.
