Equality Framework for Local Government

1. Knowing Your Community & Equality Mapping

Data collection

Working alongside one of our strategic partners, NHS Havering, we completed a Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) in 2008. The key findings of this regarding health (in)equalities were:

  • Havering does not have particularly high levels of health deprivation, with only 10.8% of the population living in the 20% most health deprived neighbourhoods (IMD and ONS Census projections)
  • In Havering, people have a similar or higher life expectancy, healthy life expectancy and years free of disability than both the regional and national averages
  • Deaths from smoking remain higher than the England average (see further examples of service improvement from data monitoring and analysis for outcomes)
  • Alcohol consumption does not appear to exceed the national averages for either binge drinking or underage drinking
  • Havering has lower levels of drug misuse than both London and England
  • Estimates suggest Havering residents consume less fruit and vegetables, take less exercise and have significantly higher levels of people who are either overweight or obese than the national average (see further examples of service improvement from data monitoring and analysis for outcomes)
